United Way to Mark 100 Years with Special WaterFire

United Way of RI to Celebrate 100 Years of Community with Full WaterFire Lighting, Invites all Rhode Islanders to Attend
October 17 event will bring people together for an evening of music, storytelling, and engagement

For 100 years, Rhode Islanders have shown what’s possible when we come together, and on Saturday, October 17, United Way of Rhode Island will celebrate that spirit with a full WaterFire lighting in downtown Providence. The culmination of its centennial year, United Way invites all Rhode Islanders to join in the special festivities.

The family-friendly event will begin at 4 p.m. and bring together residents from every corner of the state in recognition of United Way’s 100th anniversary and, more importantly, to celebrate the people, nonprofits, volunteers, donors, businesses, and communities whose collective efforts have helped make Rhode Island the special place it is today.

“This centennial is more than a birthday — it’s a celebration of generations of Rhode Islanders who have believed in the power of coming together to help one another,” said Cortney Nicolato, United Way’s president and CEO. “And every person who has volunteered, given, served, partnered, or advocated has a place in this story and has contributed to the legacy of stepping up when their neighbors needed them most.”

United Way’s centennial WaterFire will feature community-centered experiences designed to showcase Rhode Island’s generosity, diversity, and spirit of collaboration. Activities will include:

  • A torch procession and ceremonial lighting
  • Community storytelling and opportunities to connect with local nonprofits
  • Local business and downtown activations
  • Flag installations and ceremonial elements representing Rhode Island's communities
  • Music, volunteer activities, and more
As the Ocean State faces evolving challenges and opportunities, United Way is using its 100th anniversary to not only celebrate a century of impact, but also as an opportunity to galvanize the community around its vision for a Strong Rhode Island.

“We hope Rhode Islanders will join us on October 17 to celebrate where we’ve been, imagine where we’re going, and experience what’s possible when we stand together,” Nicolato added.
