RWU Commemorates Fred Korematsu Day of Civil Liberties and the Constitution

Please join Roger Williams University on January 30, as we commemorate Fred Korematsu Day of Civil Liberties and the Constitution, in collaboration with the Public Humanities & Arts Collaborative (The Co-Lab), RWU Asian American Alliance, Asian Pacific American Law Student Association, AAPI History Museum, Communities of Hope Civic Media, Japan-America Society and Black Ships Festival of Rhode Island, Inc., and RWU School of Law.

This event honors the legacy of Fred Korematsu, a civil rights activist who challenged the incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II, leading to a landmark Supreme Court case, and highlights the ongoing urgency of protecting civil liberties and constitutional rights.

Korematsu’s daughter, Karen, will join via Zoom to discuss her father’s legacy and the importance of continuing his work. Rhode Island State Senator Linda Ujifusa (D), Rep. June Speakman (D), and Jeremy Chiappetta, Senior Advisor to Governor Dan McKee (D), will also be on hand to deliver remarks.

The program will include a screening of the documentary film Of Civil Wrongs and Rights: The Fred Korematsu Story, followed by a panel discussion about the significance of establishing Fred Korematsu Day of Civil Liberties as a day for promoting greater civic engagement.

The event, which is free and open to the public, is part of a larger advocacy effort to pass a resolution for Rhode Island to formally recognize Fred Korematsu Day of Civil Liberties and the Constitution.
