Collaborate with South County YMCA for "Be a Ram for a Day"
As part of their long-standing partnership with the University of Rhode Island (URI) women’s athletics, People’s Credit Union sponsored ‘Be a Ram for a Day.’ Planned by Mie Carstensen, URI women’s varsity soccer player and People’s student-athlete liaison, in collaboration with the South County YMCA, the event gave local youth the opportunity to experience how these athletes spend a typical day on campus.
“Be a Ram for a Day allowed us to partner once again with URI women’s athletics to help shine a light on the need to empower our young people to reach their full potential,” said Courtney Hunter, Head of Community Development at People’s Credit Union. “By connecting kids with these strong and successful women and their coaches, we were able to show them what’s possible through confidence, teamwork, and leadership.”
Held on URI’s Kingston campus, the children were welcomed by coaches, athletes, and faculty, then led on tours of the track and field facility, soccer and lacrosse game fields, and the basketball center. They were also given behind-the-scenes looks at the equipment and strength & conditioning rooms and participated in several Q&A sessions with the student-athletes and their coaches.
"As a student-athlete myself, being able to give back to the community through opportunities like this means a lot to me. Working with People's Credit Union has shown me how powerful athletics can be in creating real connections and inspiring young kids," said Carstensen. "With 'Be a Ram for the Day', the goal was to welcome the South County YMCA kids into URI Athletics and show them what it is like to be a student-athlete at URI. From meeting different teams and coaches to seeing the facilities and hearing from athletes directly, I wanted them to feel included and excited about what their own future could look like. Being able to help create that experience and hopefully inspire them in some way is something really special to me."
