March 9 to April 3: Beacon Bank Branches Collect Children’s Books

Former BankRI partners with Books Are Wings to support childhood literacy

Beacon Bank, formerly Bank Rhode Island, will be collecting new and gently used children’s books from March 9 to April 3 at 23 locations in Rhode Island to support childhood literacy.

This is the 16th year the bank has partnered with Books Are Wings in what is one of the nonprofit’s largest book drives annually. Last year, the bank’s book drive collected 14,279 books. Donors may also participate virtually by purchasing new books that will be sent directly to Books Are Wings.

“Access to books is one of the simplest and most meaningful ways to support a child’s development,” said Will Tsonos, Beacon Bank’s Rhode Island president. “Through this annual drive, our clients, neighbors and colleagues make it possible for more children to choose books that inspire them to read and learn.”

Jennifer Smith, executive director of Books Are Wings, said: “When children don’t have access to books in their home, the literacy gap widens significantly. The bank’s long-standing commitment to this effort results in thousands of children gaining the opportunity to build literacy skills and a lifelong love of reading.”

All donated books will support Books Are Wings’ Rhode Island literacy programs, including Books All Year, Read to 100 Challenge, and Tale Mail Family Literacy programs, focusing on the communities of Central Falls, Pawtucket, Providence, and Woonsocket where the need is greatest. Books can be dropped off at the following Beacon Bank locations:
